Greta Gustafsson was born in Stockholm on 18.9.1905 as the last child of Anna Lovisa and Karl Alfred Gustafsson.
Greta originated on her mothers side from the noble family Sabelskjöld.
After compulsory school she worked as a soap-girl in a barber´s shop and then as a salesclerk at the department store PUB in Stockholm.
Her film-career began with some advertising films, followed by a first real part in "Peter the Vagabond" in 1922. Mauritz Stiller discovered her talent and gave her the principal part in " The Gosta Berling's Saga" (1924).
Later both Stiller and Garbo became alive to Louis B. Mayer from the MGM,Hollywood and MGM-contracts were signed.
During her film-career Garbo took part in 27 films and except one single case she was greatly praised. The change-over to the sound rather strengthened her star-status as her some hoarse voice gave further fuel to the growing Garbo-fever and to her mystery.
Greta Garbo died in New York on 15.4.1990. The internment took place at the Skogskyrkogarden cemetary in Stockholm on 16.6.1999.
In the spring of 1998 a considerable collection of photos was bought from a private collector in the USA. The pictures have been taken by the studio photographers of the MGM and they show an extremely high quality. All the Garbo-films are represented. A selection of ca 100 pictures from the whole lot of ca 1100 are now shown at the Garbo Exhibition, Storgatan 26 in Hogsby. Here you can also find a lot of other objects relating to Greta Garbo, among others an original dress from the film "The Saga of Gosta Berling" (1924).

The narrow gauge railway between Västervik and Hultsfred is the first Swedish railway that has been listed as a national heritage. The line is 71 km (44 miles) and the gauge is 891 mm (2'11''), which equals three old Swedish feet. This gauge used to be very common in southern Sweden.
The railway runs through a landscape that is very typical for Småland, through dark forests, along small lakes and through small villages. Here one can find peace and relaxation, far away from the everyday bustle. There are good possibilities to find accommodation, and the inn "Gröna Tuppen" ("The Green Rooster") in Fårhult can be recommended.
For the first time in over ten years, the narrow gauge service reached the town centre in Västervik in 2003, as the dual gauge track between Västervik and Jenny was reopened. Here, the railway runs together with the normal gauge railway from Västervik to Linköping for 2.5 miles. This is the only remaining dual gauge track in Sweden.
The service operates daily from June 28 to August 10, and Saturdays and Sundays from August 16 to August 24. Regular trains are operated by railcars from the 1950s. A steam train operates Saturdays and Sundays between Västervik and Ankarsrum and Wednesdays between Västervik and Verkebäck from July 5 to August 3. Throughout the year, there is a possibility to hire a train.
