Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
"The Kazys Varnelis House-Museum is located in the center of Vilnius' Old Town (Didzioji 26), in the Merchants' Guild building, constructed in the XVth century. The museum contains collections of antique paintings, prints, sculptures, furniture, maps, books as well as works by Kazys Varnelis.
During his fifty years in the US (1949 - 1998) Kazys Varnelis became renowned for his paintings of optical and three dimensional illusions based on geometric abstractions and minimal forms. He has received a number of top prizes and honors and has had a number of one man and group shows; his paintings are included in a number of museums - Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Detroit, etc. Besides his art work he is an enthusiastic bibliophile and collector of antiques.
The book collection contains around 7000 volumes, 1500 of them are bibliophilic items - highlights of private press (Riverside Press, Chiswick Press, etc.), famous illustrators (Thomas Rowlandson, Thomas Bewick, etc.), first editions, rare and old books beginning with the XVIth century. The collection of maps contains more than 150 old maps beginning with the XVIth century, published by Blaeu, Gastaldi, Homann, etc.
In the collection of prints we find works by Dürer, Piranesi, Goya, Callot, Goltzius and others. The work of early Renaissance master Matteo di Giovanni is the adornment of the collection of paintings. The collection of Renaissance furniture is the biggest in Lithuania. The entire collection of furniture represents different styles and periods of history of furniture up to the XXth century.
Works by Sir Francis L. Chantrey, Frederic Remington and a statue from the workshop of Donatello are the highlights of the collection of sculptures. Italian Renaissance majolica is represented by beautiful vases from the workshop of Domenico Veneziano. The collection of Oriental art containing prints by Ukiyo school and a unique woodcut "The Life of Buddha" from XIVth century is the most extensive in Lithuania.
Unity between old architecture with gothic vaults, antique furniture, old maps, prints, sculptures and modern paintings by Kazys Varnelis forms a unique ensemble which makes this museum attractive and original. " (Museums of Lithuania)

"Vilnius Picture Gallery is situated in the former Chodkeviciai Palace built in the early 17th century. The Palace has constantly been expanded and reconstructed. In the 19th century it became a characteristic building of the late classicism style. At present it is one of the most interesting ensembles of this style in Vilnius. Many elements of interior decoration (stoves, wall sculptures) characteristic of that period have been retained in the halls of the first floor with the recreated interior of the 19th century inside. As it was usual for Lithuanian mansions, collections of medals, portrait miniatures, views of the old Vilnius, portraits of well-known townsmen (collection of Vilnius Philanthropy Society) are exhibited in the halls of the gallery.
There are two people in this story who have a certain historical significance. One is the architect Laurynas Stuoka-Gucevicius (1753-1798), who was largely responsible for the spread of classical architecture in Lithuania in the late 18th century and whose work is represented by some of his drawings.
The second is the painter Pranciskus Smuglevicius (1745-1807), also on exponent of classicism, who became the first professor of painting in the Vilnius School of Art. They both worked together on the design and decoration of Vilnius Cathedral.
The classical and the later romantic schools of painting are well covered, by paintings, which deal with exotic themes and landscapes, as well as ones, which treat local subjects.
In the middle of the 19th century, due two anti-tsarist political activity and in particular the uprising of 1830-1831, Vilnius University, which included the art school, was closed down. As a result, young artists who wanted to study had to go abroad, and they returned with more nature and more subtle ideas. Alfredas Remeris' (1832-1897) painting of a girl's hands is a beguiling portrait of female sensuality that usually causes visitors to linger a while in front of it. Since 1994 the collection has been housed in the Chodkevicius Palace. Built for one of the city's famous ruling families, most of the present building dates from the 19th century. Concerts are often held in its newly restored rooms.

Permanent Exhibitions:
Lithuanian art since 16th to the early 20th century
Classicist interiors of the Palace
Memorial furniture of Jurgis Baltrusaitis.

Tuesday 1 p.m. – 6 p.m. For other time book in advance.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
"Unfortunately, prevalent trends of modern architecture and interior styles almost leave no space for forged iron items. The trade lost appeal and master smiths don‘t find apprentices to pass their trade secrets onto. The blacksmithery gallery-museum in Uzupis hopes to preserve this trade, so that forged iron articles would continue to decorate our homes and cities as they have had during many centuries.
In this gallery- museum you can learn about blacksmith trade, tools and history, visit exhibitions, view museum collection, watch professional blacksmiths forging iron, learn about essential equipment and tools or buy forged iron articles.
The Uzupis gallery-museum of blacksmithery has been founded by UAB „Vilniaus kalviai“ in 2004. This gallery- museum is related with a program of fine crafts, ethnographic trades and fairs, which is coordinated and supervised by Vilnius Old Town Renewal Agency. " (Museums of Lithuania)
