The palace houses a remarkable collection of European art. It covers the main schools and shows the development of European art from the Italian Renaissance to the 20th century.
The gallery holds paintings by several well-known artists, such as Salvator Rosa, Hobbema and Jacob van Ruisdael, and a selection of prints by Piranesi, Canaletto, Dürer, Rembrandt and Goya. The Russian school is represented by Repin, Levitan, Roerich and others. There are also many works by minor and unknown painters. All major painting styles are covered. The collection has its origins in the early years of this century, when privately owned works were shown to the public. Some were donated to the Lithuanian Art Society's permanent collection.
The museum's collections were supplemented in the post-war years by paintings confiscated from private individuals and churches by the Soviet authorities. They were displayed in the cathedral which was used as an art gallery at that time.
An indication of the quality of the private collections that belonged to the noble families in the last century is given.

Marija and Jurgis Slapeliai House and Museum

"The Museum was established in 1991 in the residence which M. and J. Slapeliai bought in 1926. The house is a monument of 17th century architecture. In 1994 the museum's exposition was opened.
The collection includes books, newspapers, documents and miscellaneos items which belonged to the family. Objects, pertaining to the cultural and scientific heritage of Eastern Lithuania from the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries are being accumulated. " (Museums of Lithuania)

"The museum is located in Sts. Johns’ Church, in the centre of Vilnius University’s old architectural ensemble. The museum stores many valuable collections of numismatics, medals and graphic works. There are many collections rich in the exhibits of pictorial art, sculpture, manuscripts, books and material records as well.
