Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Norrbottenn museum was founded in 1886. The building that we are presently housed in was built 50 years later. The architect was Eberhard Lovén. In the building there are both exhibits and offices. We also have collections, archives and offices in several other locations in Luleå.
Norrbottens museum is regional museum for the biggest county in Sweden, covering almost 1/4 of the land area of the country. The whole region of Norrbotten is our field of work and we travel extensively to reach all areas every year. We offer expertise in the fields of building restoration, archaeology and matters concerning the archiving of documents and photographs. We carry out ethnological and photographic documentations and offer a wide variety of exhibitions and programmes for both the general public and schools all over our vast region.
Our collections comprise 65,000 objects, about two million photographs and 1,300 metres of document archives, dating back as far as 1580.

Several temporary exhibitions are always on show in the museum building - art, photography, cultural history. You will find a link to an illustrated exhibition schedule on this homepage; the brief information is given in Swedish only, but you´ll get an idea!

On the first floor
The first floor contains only the museum staff´s offices. No exhibitions here, but information (in Swedish) about the museum´s current projects all over the county.
2nd floor
The Sami are one of the world´s indigenous peoples, living in four countries (Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia). Formerly they were called Lapps or Laplanders. Their "land" in the four countries is today called Sápmi. In the exhibition Sápmi - 60 years of Sami life (on show till January 2009) the photographer Bert Persson, Luleå, has depicted the changes in Sami life and in reindeer breeding since the late 1940´s. He has also returned to a Sami family in Karesuando 50 years after the publication of his evening paper article in 1955 on "the last nomads of Sweden".
In this room you will also find a showcase in the floor. This model, made in 1936, illustrates the mountain Sami reindeer breeding year in former times ("the people of eight seasons").
The texts of this exhibition (and the showcase) are available in English in a separate catalogue (on loan only - not to be taken away!)
On this floor we are now also preparing for a new (permanent) exhibition to open during 2009. This is to commemorate the war and peace of 1809, when Sweden lost Finland (till then a part of Sweden) to Russia.
3rd floor
On the top floor is the main exhibition room of Norrbottens museum. The exhibition "No longer my home" documents the radical changes in the town of Malmberget due to the expanding minig activities. The photographer Erik Holmstedt, a native son of this town, used black/white 1969-1978. In contrast larger colour pictures from 2007-2008 are shown in this important exhibition (till Jan. 11th 2009).
For children
On the second floor you will also find two playrooms for children. One, "In former times", with an old-fashioned store, a turn-of-the-century farmer´s kitchen, a "cow" and lots of other things to play with. The authentic 19th century dolls´house is there only to be looked at.
Also visit our Sami (Lappish) exhibition and playroom "Sjalljo", located across the landing from the other playroom. Here you will find traditional Sami dwellings, learn about the colours, animals, language and dress of Sámi.
The texts of this exhibition are available in English in a separate catalogue (on loan only - not to be taken away!)
If your children want to play outdoors, please visit our maze replica in the park to the west of the museum building. And look for Childrens´ Sunday in our programme!
