Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Shipping, shipbuilding and timber trade as well as mining and ironworks were important branches of industry in Aust-Agder county for many centuries, especially in the Arendal region. Frequent contacts with the world abroad put their mark on our culture and traditions.
The Aust-Agder-Museum was established in 1832 as the "Arendal Museum".
In our collections you will get a close look at proud ships and maritime history, iron stoves put in their local historical context, furniture from town houses and coastal cottages, farmlife and folklore, a permanent exhibition about the War Years 1940-45, dolls and other toys, old carriages and fishing tackle.
And we have a fascinating mineral collection.
In the open-air section of the museum you find e.g. the manor of the Langsae Estate, the Enghave House and Hesthag House and the "Bell-Shed".
At the Aust-Agder-Museum we would like to tell you about the fascinating past of Sørlandet - e.g. the story of the slaver which was wrecked near Arendal in 1768. The exhibition "Carrying slaves, ivory and gold" is dedicated to the fregate "Fredensborg`s" last voyage in the triangle trade. From Accra on the Gold Coast of Africa 265 black slaves were sent across the Atlantic; those who survived were sold on the Danish-Norwegian colonial island of St.Croix in the Caribbean. On her way home to Copenhagen the "Fredensborg" was wrecked just outside Arendal. The wreck of the slaver was found in 1974 by divers from Arendal. This exhibition has text in English as well as Norwegian.
The liberation exhibition is about another serious object: World War II. You will see everyday life during the war, and some of the sourrogats, the German soldiers in Norway, - the Russian prisoners of war and Norwegian sailors in work and fight on the oceans. They brought 40% of all oil used i GB during the war.
The Aust-Agder-Museum has permanent and changing exhibition at the Langsæ estate in Arendal. It is situated half way between the main road E18 and the town center, which is a 15 minutes walk away.
