The Highland Folk Museum, Newtonmore is situated within the boundaries of the Cairngorms National Park, situated 15 miles south of Aviemore.
The Newtonmore Living History Museum opened in 1995, and is located on a mile long site. This open air Museum includes re-constructed buildings, a 1700s 'Township', a 1940 working farm, live interpretation and a range of visitor facilities, which is still developing with two new buildings opening in 2011.
The aims of the Museum include preserving and recording aspects of Highland life from the 1700s onwards, as well as interpreting the people's lives through interactive living history and activities.

The museum in Miller House interprets the life and work of a 'renaissance man', who rose from humble beginnings as a journeyman stonemason to international renown as one of Scotland’s pioneering geologists, and as a crusading newspaper editor. An early folk historian, he also gained fame as an evangelical church reformer.
Displays include his outstanding fossil discoveries, manuscripts, shepherd’s plaid, mason’s mallet and many other artefacts. Touch screens and a hands-on workbench are favourites, especially with young visitors.

Miller’s Yard, at the rear, is known as a Garden of Wonders because of its remarkable features reflecting natural history, with Helen Denerley’s astonishing scrapmetal ammonite sculpture as its centrepiece.

The Birthplace Cottage is presented through an audio tour taking you through the grounds and interior, with vivid descriptions — many in Hugh’s own words — of the building, his ancestors and his own boyhood.

The Cottage garden was redesigned and replanted over the winter of 2009/10, and has been renamed as Lydia Garden in honour of Hugh’s wife Lydia, and their descendants

The plants are from:

We are due to re-open for our 2012 Season from early April.

Situated in Viewfield House, Nairn Museum offers visitors and locals alike a fascinating insight into the life and times of the town and surrounding area over the centuries. The wide range of permanent displays featuring various aspects of Nairn's history are well laid out and informative and, in addition a huge collection of archive material is available for study. Each year there is also a special programme of visiting exhibitions.

The Museum particularly welcomes children, providing a range of pick-up-and-touch exhibits and a safe play area.
