Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
"The museum was founded in Kaniukai Primary School’s premises in 1998. The headmaster of Uzpaliai Secondary School Giedrius Indrasius supported the idea of the museum’s establishment and provided it with the necessary rooms and other significant assistance. A retired Lithuanian teacher, the well-known ethnographer Palmyra Sirvydyte, donated the museum’s first copious and valuable exhibits.
Ona Bukeriene, Laima and Jeronimas Juskai, Janina and Povilas Keraminai, Gediminas Kubiliunas and others presented most of the museum’s exhibits, which had been used 100-150 years ago. As early as 1996 the then librarian Aldona Indrasiene, the worker of Cultural Centre Vida Juskiene, the teachers Ona Sirvydiene and Regina Abukauskiene had initiated the museum’s foundation.
Of the two rooms that are allocated to the museum, the first one presents household utensils, such as troughs, ‘gorcius’ (a sort of a canteen), rolling-pins, irons, tools for flax processing, water-pots, tea-kettles, etc. In the larger room, a 19th-century weaving machine, a bed, a table, a spinning wheel, thread twisting instruments and other utensils are installed. In addition, old-time Lithuanian newspapers, such as ‘Ausra’ (‘The Dawn’), ‘Varpas’ (‘The Bell’) and others, textbooks, books, prayer books, documents and the like are displayed in the museum. "In the halls of expositions about 700 authentic specimens of old ceramics are displayed, including mugs, tiles, crocks and pipkins, cruses, ornate pitchers, big glazed cylinders for keeping of milk, honey, butter, barrels for keeping of beer, meat, herring, flagons etc. Beside them are placed new works of ceramic art, ethnographic exhibits.
The oldest earthenware, tarnished, but still not broken, are of 150 up to 200 years old. But most exhibits date back to first decades of the 20th century.
The exposition is laid out somewhat incoherently what makes the visitor intrigued. Some classrooms of the former school abound not only in ceramic crockery, but also in other household utensils of wood, metal, glass. Tubs, bottles, ancient furniture, vats, seedlips, thousand-year old burrs intersperse the monotony of exposition." Museums of Lithuania)
