Gilt silver thread embroidery on silk.-- The Olivetti-Montefiore Torah Ark was embroidered on the occasion of the marriage of Rachel Olivetti and Judah Montefiore, one of Sir Moses Montefiore’s ancestors. The custom in Italy was that the bride’s family would embroider a ceremonial curtain for the Torah Ark, before which the wedding ceremony was to be held, as a gift to the synagogue. |
