Biogradska Gora National Park

ME- Mojkovac (near) (Montenegro)

Google Maps

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The 5,400 ha Biogradska Gora is an isolated area. Eighty procent of the park is primeval forest, having been legally protected since 1878 ( six years after Yellowstone world first national park) as Montenegro's oldest national park and covers the northwestern part of Bjelasica Mountain from the River Tara to the mountain peak. Botanist have recorded 25 families of plants and 64 pieces of trees in the park. Some trees reach a height of 60m and are 500 years old. At the heart of the park lies the the glacial the glacial Biogradska Lake (Biogradska Jezero), in the foothills of Jarceve Stijene. The park's five glittering glacial lakes are known as "mountain eyes" and are revealed one by one as you pass through 50m-tall fir forest. The huge trees, when reflected in the waters, seem much higher. The itensity and depth of colour of the eponymous Biogradska Lake is in part due to these reflections. It is impossible not to be impressed by how neatly nature arranges the vase without human intervention. .

This lake is located at the foot of the Bjelasica turrest with the highest tree, Crna Glava (2,139m), Zekova Glava (2,117m) and Troglava (2,072m), together forming a protective shield with the great forest and the minor of Biogradska Lake at its centre. The entrance to the national park is by a dedicated bridge east over the Tara River from the main Mojkovac-Kolasin road, at Kraljeva Kola, 5km from Mojkovac or 15km from Kolasin. In 1878, when the Turks had finally been evicted, this tract of land became known as Prince Nikola Petrovic's preserve. The park includes five glacial lakes; the largest and most enchanting, accessible by asphalt road, is Biogradska Lake itself ( altitude 1,094m, length 1,100m, average depth 4,5m). A pedestrian path between virgin forest encircles it, with thoughtfully positioned rest benches and a long wooden bridge spanning the swamp at the north of the Biogradska River. In summer this is lost in luxuriant greenery. The 4km access road is supplement by 40km of earth roads allowing heavy-duty tourist vehicles to cross Mountain Bjelasica and some other parts of the park. These roads are intersected by pathways. Over 2,000 plants species are said to be represented, 86 tree types, numerous fungi, dozens of butterflies and birds including the majestic crusader eagle. Since 1952, when it became a national park. it has been placed under strict preservation control; in short no artifical intervention is permitted, allowing a natural evolution in every respect ; no pruning, no planting, no removal of dead wood unless hazardous and no introduction of new species of flora and fauna.

Montenegro is well known among naturalists as the country with the highest diversity of flora and fauna in Europe in comparison to the area it covers. As such, since XIX century, it has been attracting the attention of numerous foreign scientists who have collected and studied the fauna of this region. One of the first collectors of fauna on the area of Montenegro was the heir to the throne Danilo who formed a small collection mostly of hunting game and birds. This collection was not preserved. The first natural history collection in Montenegro was formed in 1961. Around 1100 displays of birds, mammals, reptiles, ihtiofauna and about 300 herbarium pages were collected until 1968, but after the earthquake in 1979, when the museum building was heavily damaged, this collection ended up in depots. Proclamation of Montenegro ecological state in 1991 increased the interest of public in its natural values and their permanent protection. That contributed to the creation of conditions for establishment of Natural History Museum institution where the natural treasury of Montenegro would be studied and presented to the public in adequate manner. The Museum was founded in November 1995. The fund of the Museum comprises of ample collection of flora and fauna of Montenegro.

The old town Medun (Meteon)

ME-81000 Podgorica (near) (Montenegro)

Google Maps

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
more of a fortress, situated 13 kilometers northeast from Podgorica, has origins in the classical period. It was erected originally as a fortress, later on as a town, between IV and III century B.C. Well preserved walls of the fortress were built of big blocks of trimmed stone, placed in a number of rows. With respect to solidity and size of the construction it substantially differs from the construction of other, less significant Illyrian towns.

From the cultural-artistic point of view, two lower dig ups in the rock on the road from the lower to the upper town are very interesting. Studies refer to the conclusion that it was the place of performance of rituals related to the cult of snake that represented myth ancestor to the Illyrians.
Necropolis is sited north from the upper town. It originates from the Illyrian period, but has not been studied.

Roman legions conquered Medun around 167 A.D. On that occasion the last Illyrian king Gentije and his family were captivated. Medun has not yet been studied sufficiently. Not only that it is interesting for its distant and rich past, it also represents an object significant for studying of all cultural epochs from prehistoric to Middle Ages.

Our famous writer, tribe leader, Montenegrin duke and hero Marko Miljanov lived at the foot of walls of the town and the fortress. He was buried in the acropolis in front of the small church.

The Ruins of the City of Duklja

ME-81000 Podgorica (Montenegro)

Google Maps

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
The city of Duklja was situated about three kilometers northwest from today’s Podgorica on a flat plateau between the rivers Zeta and Moraca. At that time it was a large city with about 8-10 thousand residents where all urban issues were resolved: water supply, sewage, streets.
The Roman Empire consolidated in Duklja in the I century, when the city was conquered by Roman legions, following long fights with Illyrians. The Romans experienced rapid growth, and soon Duklja became political, cultural and religious center of the Prevalis province, with municipal rights, having crucial influence on the change of structure of population as well as on social- economic relations. The arrival of new residents meant opening of the city especially towards the Adriatic coast.(c)DatabaseVCMSMünchen06
Trade connections were developed with Italy, Dalmatian and eastern regions, and some time later with Macedonia and Greece.

At the beginning of the VI century Duklja experienced catastrophic earthquake, and in 609 A.D. it was robbed and again devastated by the Avars and Slavs. It is mentioned under that name for a long period of time but in the 10th century new name Zeta is used more often as the replacement for the old name.
