The VIDA Museum & Art-gallery is situated on route 136, nine kilometres south of Borgholm,
Oland, with a beautiful hilltop setting, overlooking the waters of Kalmarsund.
The present 2000 m2 building, in glass, concrete, iron and wood, lies on a historic
site just north of the Halltorp Inn. At the time of its inaugural opening in June, 2001,
the newly-built museum featured an art-gallery and two wings devoted, respectively,
to the work of Ulrica Hydman-Vallien and that of Bertil Vallien. Here can be seen the
entire range of their artistry, encompassing four decades. The most important
starting-points from the early 1960s, to the very latest work in glass, ceramics,
sculpture and painting are shown in the museum.
In 2003, the NORTH GALLERY was added, to house the Rasjo art-collection:
an extensive collection of, primarily, contemporary, Swedish art. In 2008
there's a unique show of paintings of Olle Bærtling (1911-1981). .
Another new gallery opened in June, 2005, to coincide with artist
Ulf Trotzig's 80th birthday. THE TROTZIG GALLERY will display Trotzig´s art,
spanning fifty years. Trotzig is one of Sweden's most established artists, and
has exhibited his work on numerous occasions, not least at the Royal Academy
of Fine Arts, in Stockholm. He and his wife, authoress Birgitta Trotzig, are part of
the Swedish cultural elite. To celebrate the octogenarian, we dedicated an
art-gallery to him.
This summer, 2008 the VIDA art-gallery will show paintings by Björn Wessman and Lena Cronqvist. Ulrica Hydman-Vallien & Bertil Vallien shows new glass sculptures and paintings and there are also new paintings to be seen in the Trotzig hall. An exhibition of silver, on various themes, is held, annually, in the spacious museum shop – this year 2008 the designated theme is "SILVER 2008 - COLOURS/ BLACK & WHITE". Twenty-five silversmiths are invited. In the museum shop you'll find lots of special glass items of Ulrica HV and Bertil Vallien, They are special made for the VIDA museum, and are not be found anywhere else.

VIDA also has an indoor and an outdoor coffee-shop with fabulous views of Kalmarsund.
WHY VIDA? We, Mr Börge and Mrs Barbro Kamras, the creator/owners of the VIDA Museum, have build the VIDA Museum & Art Gallery at the edge of the heathland Alvaret, with an enchanting view over the Kalmarsund, on one of the most beautiful part of the island. We had to wait for twenty years before this beautiful piece of land was for sale. Our dreams came through when we opened the first part in 2001, seven years ago. Today the total exhibition area comprises some 2000 m2, most of the area at one level. This project is totally private and we are the architects behind all this, both outdoors and indoors. We have also worked with art exhibitions outside VIDA such as the international exhibition Global Art Glass Triennial at Borgholm Castle. The exhibition in 2005 was the third of its kind. There in this magnificent building, the first glass Triennial was mounted in 1999, the second in the year 2002, hopefully there will be one in the near future..... Global Art Glass Triennials have put Borgholm - Öland and South of Sweden on the map. These exhibitions are now one of the foremost glass events in the world.

„Borgholm's town museum is one of Borgholm's most beautiful manors which goes back to the early 19th century. In the magnificent main building, the interior is typical of that time period, along with depictions of its industrial history and collections of art and artefacts from Öland. You will also find out more about the time when Borgholm was a popular seaside resort where people would seek rest, treatment and bathing.“ (http://www.smaland-oland.com)

Borgholm Castle is one of the most well-known buildings in Sweden and reflects nearly one thousand years of different architectural styles and construction methods.
Borgholm Castle, ”the most beautiful ruin in Scandinavia”, is one of those examples of architecture, that leaves hardly any visitor unaffected. Its size is overwhelming, its position enchanting.
It is very uncommon to find nature and architecture so coalesced as here, a concord that was even more emphasised when the castle in 1806 was ravaged by serious fire, and the naked structures of its limestone walls were all that remained of its former grandeur.
Borgholm Castle has been teeming with people through the centuries: kings with their families, architects, castle wardens and men of guard, prisoners and jailers, industrialists and crofters. Not to mention the builders: masons, lime-burners and mortar blenders, carpenters, blacksmiths, stonemasons and stone setters, joiners, scaffold builders, glaziers and house painters, but also detailed peasants, prisoners and members of the armed forces.
Far from all were Swedes. In certain periods Danish and German was even more often spoken than Swedish in the castle. Today, Borgholm Castle is one of the greatest tourist attractions in the region and gives the visitor a unique opportunity to stroll through Swedish, Scandinavian and European history, ranging over more than 800 years.

„The old castle in Kalmar looks as if it was taken directly from a storybook. Kings and queens, princes and princesses lived here for hundreds of years. During the summer season children can meet Princess Anna Vasa and follow along as she talks about the castle and life at the castle. In the Royal Kitchen you will find a children's workshop, where you can make swords, shields, crowns, jewelry and play games from the time of Gustav Vasa. Perhaps someone will dress up as a princess and be photographed as a memory of their visit to the "king's castle." “ (http://www.smaland-oland.com)
