The museum is situated in Siltasaari in the centre of Kalajoki. The famous district court sessions against Pietists held in 1838-1839 were started in this house, which originally belonged to the Törnvall family. The exhibition shows local means of livelihood.

The museum's exhibition rooms are located in the former police house designed by architect Eino Pitkänen. Completed in 1936, the building is an example of pure functionalist style.
The collection concentrates on Finnish art works from the 1980s and 1990s. Important series of works within the collection include those by Juhana Blomsted, Carolus Enckell, Outi Heiskanen, Tapio Junno, Pauno Pohjolainen, Kain Tapper and Nina Terno. Significant Kainuu artists represented include H. Ahtela, Helvi Hyvärinen, Matti Koskela, Jaakko Leppänen and Kaarlo Mikkonen.
Kajaani Art Museum is also responsible for the collection of the City of Kajaani, which consists mainly of works by Kainuu artists displayed in various public buildings in the city.

Tuupala museum is a museum of rural buildings. The furnishing of the interior in the main house varies from the 1880s to 1960s, portraying the life on a family in Kainuu who inhabited the house. A store, an inn and a post office, among others, have operated in this house. There are four old log houses in the museum area, all in their original place. In the courtyard, you can also find a tar boat.

The civilian problems are also strongly presented. The topics include e.g. evacuation, frontline service, battles and the post-war time.

The Jalonniemi House was designed by a local Suomussalmi architect H. Pyykkönen. At the request of the Suomussalmi municipality, the Finish National Board of Antiquities has made available numerous artefacts for the exhibition of prehistory located in the Jalonniemi House. These include items of jewelry, casting moulds, stone axeheads, adzes, flint and slate arrowheads, quartz scrapers, tools from the Iron Age, as well as the entire contents of the cremation grave found at Peranka. The northern-most large-scale site of rock paintings in Finland can be found in Hossa. These are known as the Värikallio paintings and a giant 6 metres by 3 metres photograph of the site is on display in the exhibition.

The museum is located in Suomussalmi church village. All of the 16 museum buildings have been moved to their present site from various villages of the region. The museum gives an idea of how people lived in the 18th and 19th century in Suomussalmi.
The main building is the house of Alanne, one of the first known houses in Suomussalmi. Originally it was located by Lake Alanne and used as an inn by Karelian tradesmen.
