The Arktikum provides an insight into the way of life, culture and history of the North. It is a museum, science centre, popular cultural venue with meeting and congress facilities and an architectural sight.
The Provincial Museum of Lapland studies and presents nature in Lapland and the cultural heritage it has moulded. The permanent and temporary exhibitions portray culture, history, traditions and modern life in the Arctic regions and depicts peoples’ lives in these harsh conditions. There are displays of archaeological finds dating back thousands of years and fascinating examples of how structural change in our time has put northern inhabitants to the test.
The exhibition also features Sámi culture, with its costumes and languages, and small-scale models of Rovaniemi from 1939 and 1944.

Sammelschwerpunkte/Main collections
Siida is the home of the Sámi Museum and the Northern Lapland Nature Centre. With its cultural and nature exhibitions, it is both a meeting place and an exhibition center.
The cultural and ecological exhibitions of Siida tell about how northern nature and an indigenous people, the Sámi, have adapted to life in extreme conditions. By bringing their knowledge and skills together, the Sámi Museum and the Northern Lapland Nature Centre have created an information package that focuses on the seasonal cycle of the North.
The collections of the Sámi Museum consist of the open-air museum and its buildings and structures, a collection of artefacts and photographs, the archives, and a reference library. In the open-air museum, the visitor can have a look at old Sámi dwellings and trapping and fishing gear. The artefacts are related to living, moving and transportation, clothing and handicrafts as well as beliefs, religion and customs. All the three Sámi groups of Finland - the North Sámi, Inari Sámi and Skolt Sámi - are represented.
