The 4-mb POMMERN was commissioned in the year 1903 by the German company B. Wencke & Söhne from Hamburg and launched at J. Reid & Co in Glasgow, Scotland. The POMMERN was a cargo ship and during her German years she sailed between Europe and South America. From Europe she sailed with general cargo and returned with saltpeter (guano).
The POMMERN is unique in that she is still in orginal condition and is shown as the chargoship she once was. All other existing ships in her class having been rebuilt at some time.

The permanent exhibition concentrates on such themes as hunting and fishing, the earth, the sea, the people and autonomy, Åland´s archaeology, folklore and natural sciences.
In 1982 the museum received the European Museum of the Year Award.

The museum is housed in an old post office from 1828, presenting history of local mail services and transports. An exhibition describes the life of the farmers which during nearly 500 years were involved with the transport of the mail from Sweden to Eckerö on the route across the Åland Sea for the further transport to Turku.

June 18th - August 13th, all days, 10:00 - 13:00 and 13:30 - 17:00, Tue-Sun. After the 13th of August, the museum is open for groups only.

The museum in Föglö is a creative museum with different themes and displays every year. The museum is located right next to the ferry harbour in Degerby, Föglö and is accommodated in an old warehouse from the 1820’s.
