"Mihkli Farmstead Museum, one of the most peculiar museums in Estonia, is located at the western coast of Saaremaa. No collection work had to be undertaken for the establishment of the museum: in addition to a full building complex a rich collection of household utensils had preserved. Most of the utensils – the handwork of six generations – were made by the inhabitants of the farmstead in the course of two centuries. Here the museum exhibits can be seen in their natural environment. The last owner of the farmstead Jakob Reht gave the historic building complex together with the best preserved ethnographic objects to Saaremaa Museum free of charge, himself becoming the first employee of the new-born farmstead museum. ” (Estonian Museums)

"The Aavik family bought the house in Vallimaa Street in 1896. A linguist and a reformer of the Estonian language Johannes Aavik lived in the house of his parents as a pupil in 1898–1902 and later in 1919–26 when he worked as the Estonian language teacher at Saaremaa Co-educational Gymnasium and became one of the most outstanding reformers of the Estonian language. The Home-Museum of Johannes and Joosep Aavik, which exposition introduces the life and work of Johannes Aavik (1880–1973) and that of the local cultural figure Joosep Aavik (1899–1989) also exposes the living conditions of a citizen of Kuressaare in the beginning of the 20th century. ” (Estonian Museums)

"Saaremaa Research Society, founded by local intellectuals, laid a basis to the collections of Saaremaa Museum. A visitor can roam about in the best-preserved medieval citadel in the Baltic region that was built as the residence the Bishop of Saare-Lääne in the 14th century. The convent-building type fortress is a superb example of Late Gothic architecture. The permanent exposition of history gives an overview of the peculiar past of the county from ancient times to 1940. The permanent exposition of natural history introduces local flora, fauna and geology. In summer a café is open on the upper floor of the tower. ” (Estonian Museums)

"The trestle windmill standing at the gate of Eemu farmstead in the village of Linnuse in Muhumaa is one of the few functional and working windmills in Estonia. Jüri Ling, a man living in the same village, rebuilt the windmill that stands at the distance of ca 1 km from the dyke of Väike Väin on the old base.
The foregoer of a mill was a quern, first moved by the power of water and later by the power of wind. First records of windmills with upright vanes date back to the 12th century Western Europe; windmills have been known in Livonia since 1330. The small farm windmills of West-Estonia and the islands constitute an outstanding phenomenon in peasant architecture with counterparts only in Scandinavia and West-Finland.
In addition to exploring the windmill one can also try to grind with a quern. ” (Estonian Museums)
